Chronic Health Effects:
Substance is reproductive effectors in rats. Mutagenic to Rat cells. Exposure to the material for prolonged periods may cause physical defects in the developing embryo (teratogensis)
Trimellitic Anhydride: Acute or chronic overexposure may cause systemic toxicity, including adverse effects to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It is an irritant and respiratory sensitizer.
EFFECTS ON THE HUMAN:
TMA inhalation by humans can cause respiratory irritation, which is generally accompanied by coughing and nasal discharge, and can occur immediately upon a moderately heavy exposure to TMA. In susceptible individual, repeated inhalation of TMA can cause respiratory sensitization that may result in one of the following syndromes.
1. Immediate onset asthma/ rhinitis; This response occurs in sensitized individuals, typically within minutes of exposure and can include coughing, tightness in the chest, wheezing due to constriction of the airways, and sneezing. Symptoms may range from mild to severe. Recovery is generally rapid and complete following termination of exposure. Medical therapy, such as is routinely given for asthma, may be necessary.
2. Late onset respiratory systemic syndrome (TMA flu): This response occurs in sensitized individuals, typically from 4 to 8 hr(s) after exposure has ended. Symptoms are very much like influenza and include coughing wheezing, breathlessness,
congestion, fever, chills, fatigue and generalized aching. Recovery usually occurs without treatment and generally is complete 6 to 12 hours after the onset of symptoms. Infrequently, respiratory symptoms can progress, requiring medical attention.
3 . Hemoptysis and hemolytic anemia: This rare response has occurred in sensitized individuals exposed to TMA fumes and can result in severe symptoms (often requiring hospitalization) consisting of cough, breathlessness, impaired respiratory function, and anemia. Fumes are solid particles formed by condensation of the vapor resulting from heat vaporization of TMA.
